Satellite earth observation has changed beyond recognition in the last 15 years, moving from a few commercial data providers to several tens, but procurement practices have not kept up with this change, with many organisations still competing data providers every few years with the goal of selecting up to a few for parallel contracts. Today, there is a need to provide the market with an agile, efficient and scalable method of procuring data from a constellation of data providers, in order for procurement and contract management costs to be manageable and for access to earth observation to evolve as business needs evolve. Geocento have designed a solution for this, in the form of virtual constellation design and management. Key features of such a capability that Geocento has developed includes the following: 1. Off-the-shelf, or custom constellation design, in terms of selection of data providers, product licensing, data provider SLAs, product standards and other features, to ensure that the client has access to earth observation on their terms. 2. Your own private constellation, managed by Geocento on your behalf and independently of the data providers (Geocento take no fees from data providers and so are working solely for the client). 3. Flexible procurement, via data provider lifecycle management, allowing new market entrants to be onboarded in days or weeks, enabling the client to keep up with the global earth observation constellation as it evolves. 4. Dynamic purchasing, with competition between the data provider network delivering performance and cost benefits, while invoicing and payment management ensure that the process is efficient. 5. Corporate risk management from harmonised licensing and product standards. The result for the client is significantly reduced net data costs (accounting for constellation overheads) as well as performance and risk benefits.
